Doing the Washing Up, and pondering...

Heroines never seem to marry down, do they? Looking at Heyer, specifically, the only heroine who can be said to be marrying down instead of up is Bab from An Infamous Army, (grand-daughter of a duke, sister/daughter of a marquis to brother of an earl) and even thats debateable, since she's not only 'Bad Bab Alastair' the one every mama warns her sons against, she's the widow of a baronet, and is constantly short of cash (and will be even shorter once she remarries). (On a tangential note, who else thinks that the church resounded with the sound of grinding teeth on the day of that wedding. Between Gussie, and everyone who thinks that Charles is far to good for Bab, every Society dentist in London must have been having a field day)
